We provide award-winning toilet facilities — including disabled toilet facilities — in our passenger terminal buildings which we recommend all passengers take advantage of before travelling. There are no disabled toilets onboard our shuttles. There are additional toilets available in the boarding lanes, and at the petrol station immediately after you leave the terminal and in the Flexiplus Lounges for customers travelling Flexiplus.
Please note, that whilst there are small toilet cubicles on the shuttles, the nature of our service means that we cannot guarantee they will be working during any particular minute crossing.

Visit our terminal Once through Check-in, head to our Passenger Terminal Buildings for services, shopping and refreshments before boarding. The Chunnel is actually comprised of three tunnels: two rail tunnels, used for freight and passenger trains, and a service tunnel.
The Channel Tunnel is That's the equivalent of Eiffel Towers stacked on top of each other. The idea of a tunnel under the Channel was first proposed in but construction wasn't started until It was completed in , and Eurostar services started in November Vehicle traffic for Le Shuttle gets on in Folkestone and gets off in Calais.
Folkestone is about an hour and a half's drive from London and Calais is about three hour's drive from Paris. Eurostar trains, which are passenger only, leave from St Pancras International station in London some services also take on passengers in Ebbsfleet and Ashford in Kent and go directly to the center of Paris and the other Eurostar destinations in Europe.
At its deepest, the tunnel is 75 meters feet below the sea level. That's the same as baguettes balancing on top of each other. The Channel Tunnel is made of three separate tunnels running parallel to each other. All three tunnels were drilled below the seabed and link Folkestone in Kent to Coquelles in Pas-de-Calais.
However, the idea of connecting the UK and France by tunnel is much older than people think — dating back to the early s when its supporters included Napoleon Bonaparte. Many of the workers used hand tools, but a state-of-the-art boring machine was also used. Work was eventually abandoned until construction on the tunnel as we now know it began again in While we prefer our journeys comfortable, relaxing and underground through the Euro Tunnel, a few dare devils have travelled in slightly different ways.
The Channel Tunnel or in the air, on the water or in a bathtub? You decide. He first attempted the crossing on 12 August , but had to give up due to strong winds and rough seas. Undeterred, he tried for a second time 12 days later. Escorted by three boats and covered in porpoise oil, he reached Calais in 21 hours 45 minutes, despite challenging tides and a jellyfish sting. American swimmer Sarah Thomas raised the bar in September , setting a world record by becoming the first person to swim across the Channel four times non-stop.
She completed her incredible swim in 54 hours and 10 minutes. On July 31 , Felix Baumgartner jumped from a plane 30, feet 9, meters above Dover wearing a carbon wing and flew for 22 miles Six minutes later he landed in France and became the first man to cross the channel in a wing suit.
He told the journalists shortly after landing "For the last 2, meters I could see the other side and I knew I was going to make it". Tim first attempted this incredible challenge in but was forced to abandon when he was caught in a storm with force 6 winds.
Before attempting the crossing, Tim had to learn to row and trained with Britain's Olympic rowing team. Tim completed the grueling journey in nine hours and six minutes. With its m long, it allows technicians to work on a complete Shuttle without having to disconnect and reform each section, a long and costly task. The Folkestone terminal, located at 8 km from the undersea tunnels at Shakespeare Cliff, covers a hectare area, i. Its construction required first to stabilise the site in order to prevent the sides of the adjacent escarpment from subsiding.
The level of the whole site was then raised to level out the soil and eliminate steep slopes. Both terminals are easily reached through their direct access to the motorway network in the UK M20 and in France A They both represent the loading and unloading points for vehicles travelling on Eurotunnel Shuttles.
Access to the terminals is made through tolls, for passenger vehicles and for trucks. Once the self-check-in operations are done, customers get to the border controls, carried out by British and French police and customs.
All controls are carried out before departure in order to enable customers to continue their journey directly on the motorway network on the other side of the Channel.
Passengers then have the opportunity to take a break at the Victor Hugo terminal in Folkestone or at the Charles Dickens terminal in Coquelles shops, restaurants, play area, etc or to drive towards the allocation areas before reaching the 12 platforms area, each 1-km long.
Vehicles can then load on board Le Shuttle for cars, coaches, camper-vans, caravans, motorcycles,.. There are several different areas on each terminal — passenger, freight, control centres, administration and maintenance buildings. On top of the many IT systems enabling vehicles to be recognised upon arrival at the self check-in tolls and the many screens linked to about a hundred cameras, the TCC have a direct view over the allocation lanes for vehicles.
There are two centres, one on each terminal, and each can take turns to take over control of the system. The RCC manages all rail traffic trains and shuttles on the Concession, i.
The system is in two parts, the Rail Traffic Management RTM , which controls the rail traffic system, and the Engineering Management System EMS which controls the fixed equipment such as ventilation, lighting, power for the catenary.
